Senior Advocacy
Senior Advocacy is a "seniors helping
seniors" program designed to help
participants avoid institutionalization and has
proven enormously successful. Peer advocates are
trained to assist other seniors following
hospital stays, assess in-home needs, and
accompany seniors to health care provider
appointments. These advocates ensure that
participants receive the services needed to
maintain independence by providing support,
companionship, and a link to medical and
community resources.

Social
Activities
One of the most important ways we serve the area
is by providing seniors with a warm and caring
community. To help build and strengthen
friendships among participants we sponsor a
variety of activities designed to bring people
together. Regularly scheduled activities include
arts and crafts projects, classes in art and
music, bingo games with prizes, as well as fun
and educational day trips to orchards, cultural
events, and casinos. Community members can also
take advantage of our shuffleboard and pool
tables.

Food,
Friendship & Nutrition
St. Patrick Senior Center provides hot meals to
approximately 200 seniors daily, seven days per
week. The Center also hosts nutrition classes to
reinforce the importance of eating a daily
nutritious meal and to help seniors determine
how to judge the nutritional value of the food
they are eating. The daily meal also provides an
opportunity for social interaction, an important
component in sustaining participants'
self-sufficiency and independence.

Exercise
and Fitness
Exercise is an important part of healthy living,
and St. Patrick Senior Center offers a variety
of options designed to fit the needs of the
senior community. Our exercise room is open
seven days a week, plus we offer classes in
hustle dancing, Hawaiian dancing, belly dancing,
yoga, and tai chi. Good for both body and soul,
these classes combine health and fun, and are
quite popular.

Computer
Learning Center
In 2000, St. Patrick Senior Center opened its
state-of-the-art computer room, providing
multiple-level instruction and unlimited
internet access to all members. The SeniorNet
Computer Learning Center, with funding support
from the Detroit Empowerment Zone, is a
collaborative project between St. Patrick Senior
Center and the Detroit Area Agency on Aging and
is one of three regional centers. Computer
classes are offered daily with an open lab
session available one day weekly. All classes
are taught by trained staff or volunteers in
self-paced, small group settings.

Transportation
The center provides many services and activities
right in the heart of the community, but
participants often have additional needs and
opportunities that require some degree of
travel. Through our transportation program we
provide seniors with a safe and convenient way
of getting where they need to be.

Intergenerational
Programs
Students of all ages come to St. Patrick Senior
Center to provide community service, and these
exchanges provide wonderful opportunities for
communication and learning to both students and
seniors. The mutual benefits from this exchange
are numerous as each participant shares wisdom
and experience with the other. Additionally, our
field placement program allows nursing students
from Madonna University to gain valuable real
world experience with weekly visits.
